Dental Crown Most Americans understand and acknowledge the value of a great-looking smile, a point proven by a recent survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry which found that 48 percent of respondents believe that a smile is someone's most memorable feature. At the Dental Spa's locations in Lake Ridge and Woodbridge, VA, you’ll be presented with a number of solutions for how to fix your smile, including incredibly versatile dental crowns. Generally, crowns are the preferred choice if you have one or two teeth that are damaged, injured, cracked, discolored, or not blending in well with the rest of your smile.

Dental Crowns: What Are They?
To understand the purpose and function of a dental crown, you must understand the various layers of a tooth. There’s the outer enamel, dentin layer, and, finally, the inner pulp. A dental crown is a replacement for the outermost layer, which is the main source of protection for the whole tooth. It can be made from many different types of materials, but porcelain is the preferred choice because of its combination of durability and visual appeal. When applied to a tooth, a crown will be virtually indistinguishable from a normal tooth.

Dental Crowns: What They Do
When you learn what a dental crown can do for your smile, you may be more motivated to contact your Lake Ridge and Woodbridge, VA dentist for an evaluation. A crown serves multiple functions, including how they:

- Protect the inner layer of a tooth, which is filled with soft tissue and sensitive nerves.
- Make the teeth look more attractive by correcting years of damage.
- Fill in small gaps in the smile that could cause orthodontic issues and provide support to the other teeth.

How Your Crown Visits Will Go
If you’re anxious about what you can expect when you have a crown installed, there’s no reason to worry. You’ll experience minimal to no discomfort at each appointment, and each visit will last for about 45 minutes to an hour. The procedures include gentle removal of enamel, dental impressions, and bonding of the custom crown. Your dentist will schedule you for two or three appointments to complete the installation process.

Make Your Smile Better
A crown is a dental device that has helped numerous patients reclaim the strength and beauty of their smiles. Call (703) 580-8288 today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Marv Thomas at the Dental Spa in Woodbridge, VA, and dial (703) 580-1443 for the Lake Ridge location.

Dental ImplantMissing teeth? One of the most revolutionary developments in dentistry is the development of dental implants. Dental implants are anchors that are implanted in the jawbone. The great majority of implants are made from titanium or titanium alloy. The Dental Spa, which has offices in Woodbridge, VA, offers dental implants to their patients. Dr. Marv Thomas is one of the top dentists in Woodbridge, VA. Read on to find out what dental implants can do for you.

1. Beautify Your Smile- Missing teeth can affect a person's self esteem. If you have low self-esteem, you may avoid things you find challenging and hide yourself away from social situations. Dental implants can restore your smile, improve your appearance, and make you feel better about yourself. Dental implants have a beautiful appearance. They look like real teeth, and crowns can be made with all-ceramic materials.

2. Prevent Teeth Shifting- Dental implants will keep your smile healthy. If you don't replace your missing teeth with implants, the neighboring teeth will begin to shift into the empty spaces. This puts your remaining teeth at risk for fractures and damage. Dental implants can prevent your original teeth from drifting out of place.

3. Stop Jawbone Loss- The most common cause of jawbone loss is tooth loss left unreplaced. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that stimulate jawbone growth and stop bone loss. Dental implants will keep your jawbone healthy and strong. Dentures and fixed dental bridges address the cosmetic problem of missing teeth but do not prevent bone loss.

4. Enjoy Food Again- Our teeth help us break down food for proper digestion. Missing teeth can result in difficulty eating. With dental implants in place, you will benefit from an improvement in oral function. Dental implants function like your natural teeth. With dental implants, you will be able to eat normally again.

5. Improved Comfort- Dental implants eliminate some of the key problems of dentures, including discomfort, gum irritation, sore gums, and poor fit. Unlike dentures, dental implants do not move around inside the mouth. The result is comfort and freedom from embarrassment.

6. Improved Speech- Missing teeth can cause speech problems, including mumbling or slurring of words. Not so with dental implants, which feel and function like your original teeth. Dental implants can improve your clarity of speech. With dental implants, you will feel confident when speaking with people.

Want to live your best life? Start your smile. Say yes to dental implants! Call The Dental Spa at (703) 580-1443 today to schedule a dental consultation at Spa One in Woodbridge, VA. At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!

Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”

We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:

Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.

Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

When the multi-platinum recording artist, songwriter and TV personality Jason Derulo was recently asked about his ideal woman, his answer covered a remarkably broad spectrum. "There’s no specific thing," he said, "so I think it’s unfair to say what my ‘type’ is." But it turns out that there is one thing the So You Think You Can Dance judge considers essential: A beautiful smile.

"I’m not into messy teeth," Derulo said. "If the grill has spaces and different colors, it’s not my vibe."

As it turns out, he may be on to something: A number of surveys have indicated that a bright, healthy smile is often the first thing people notice when meeting someone new. Yet many are reluctant to open up that big grin because they aren’t satisfied with the way their teeth look. If you’re one of them, consider this: Modern cosmetic dentistry offers a variety of ways to improve your smile — and it may be easier and more affordable than you think.

For example, if your smile isn’t as bright as you would like it to be, teeth whitening is an effective and economical way to lighten it up. If you opt for in-office treatments, you can expect a lightening effect of up to 10 shades in a single one-hour treatment! Or, you can achieve the same effect in a week or two with a take-home kit we can custom-make for you. Either way, you’ll be safe and comfortable being treated under the supervision of a dental professional — and the results can be expected to last for up to two years, or perhaps more.

If your teeth have minor spacing irregularities, small chips or cracks, it may be possible to repair them in a single office visit via cosmetic bonding. In this process, a liquid composite resin is applied to the teeth and cured (hardened) with a special light. This high-tech material, which comes in colors to match your teeth, can be built up in layers and shaped with dental instruments to create a pleasing, natural effect.

If your smile needs more than just a touch-up, dental veneers may be the answer. These wafer-thin coverings, placed right on top of your natural teeth, can be made in a variety of shapes and colors — from a natural pearly luster to a brilliant "Hollywood white." Custom-made veneers typically involve the removal of a few millimeters of tooth enamel, making them a permanent — and irreversible — treatment. However, by making teeth look more even, closing up spaces and providing dazzling whiteness, veneers just might give you the smile you’ve always wanted.

If you would like more information about cosmetic dental treatments, please call our office to arrange a consultation. You can learn more in the Dear Doctor magazine article “Cosmetic Dentistry — A Time for Change.”

Tooth staining is something that few of us can avoid. Our teeth yellow naturally as we age, and many lifestyle factors can affect the teeth whiteningbrightness of your smile. The good news is that for most people, it’s easy to restore your smile to a whiter shine. Teeth whitening is one of the most sought-after cosmetic dentistry treatments, due to its simplicity and its dramatic impact on your look.

Why Do Teeth Stain?

There are many reasons that teeth can become discolored, including trauma, disease, and the use of certain medications. However, the most common sources of tooth staining are:

Time. As the years go by, the enamel on your teeth becomes thinner and reveals the yellow tinge of the dentin beneath.

Food and drink. Frequent drinkers of red wine, tea, coffee, and/or cola may find that their teeth become stained more quickly.

Tobacco use. Repeated exposure to nicotine and tar can darken your teeth significantly. Heavy smokers often find that their teeth turn a shade of brown.

Poor dental hygiene. Forgetting to brush, floss, or have your teeth professionally cleaned can lead to staining. The buildup of plaque and tartar will discolor your teeth and lead to more serious conditions as well.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

First, your Woodbridge dentist will apply protective barriers to your lips and gums. Then they'll apply the bleaching agent to your teeth, usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. This peroxide-based substance breaks up the stain molecules and lifts them out of your enamel.

Teeth whitening is a low-risk procedure when performed by a dental professional. Results can last up to several years, depending on your lifestyle and dental hygiene habits.

Woodbridge Teeth Whitening

Don't let yellow teeth make you embarrassed to show off your smile. If you're looking to get rid of those unsightly stains and freshen up your look, a whitening treatment could be just what you need. For teeth whitening in Woodbridge, VA, call your dentist at Dental Spa.
